I just began fishing a couple of months ago, and it has become my new addiction. I am also super stoked to finally be ethically and environmentally gathering my own meat. It’s hard to explain but im sure yall get it, eating a fish that you caught and killed is such a cool feeling. Anyways, on my fishing journey down in Southern Illinois I’ve eaten a lot of fish that people consider gross, and I am always shocked. Down here crappie is the cream of the crop, but I’ve tried bass, buffalo, carp, drum, all of which were fucking awesome. May be the fact if you fry anything it taste damn good, but im starting to think it may just be based off of similar bullshit to why people thing msg causes headaches.

I just ran a thread on this last week. There were tons of replies, and the consensus is there really is no such thing as a trash fish. WHERE you catch the fish from does make a big difference. Be careful about water quality.

Nope. The term ‘trash fish’ is born of ignorance, especially when applied to native species like buffalo.

Some fish taste better than others. However, some of it has a lot to do with other stuff unrelated to fishing.

Most trash fish are native species with important roles in the ecosystem. Even if they don’t taste good, they’re still important. People who call them trash fish are trash people IMO.
