I have always found that when working on my tempo, hitting my driver was counter-productive. I found it very hard to keep swinging with my usual tempo when I got the big stick in my hands. My swing got quicker and off tempo, in my attempts to crush it. When this happens I always went back to my wedges and play slow simple shots to try and re-gain my tempo.

Well, the U.S. Open proved once again why it is the lowest rated major (IMO) on the PGA Tour. Despite a result that was decided in the last few holes of the tournament and some stellar play by feel-good champion Michael Campbell, the overall excitement of the tournament just isn’t as high as it is for the other three majors.

Many of the top players come out to play in Arnie’s tournament and many players use it as a tune up event for The Players Championship and The Masters. Problem: Many players have putting strokes that do not involve the shoulders. Their putting motion then becomes more of a flick with the arms, wrists and hands.
A Supplement To Our 2005 Awards

We’ve had a few questions about the awards so I thought I’d take some time to answer them for all to see.
New TaylorMade Driver Coming in December
We have been hearing rumors about it for a little while and now TaylorMade has announced that the new R7 425 and 425TP will be released in early December. The date we have heard is December 9th so expect to see it sometime around then. A few online retailers have the new R7 425 on their sites and have December 11th as the release date. The technology is similar to the old R7 but with more discretionary weight to move around and a better shaft. There are pictures of this driver up on Golfwrx right now. The other new driver, the R7 460 won’t be released until spring 2006. Watch for updates on the TaylorMade website in the very near future.

The Truth About Distance
To help generate additional club head speed and greater distance, the key is to retain your release angle. The release angle is the angle created by your left arm and the shaft on the downswing (lag). Put simply, the more acute this angle is and the longer it is maintained into impact, the further the golf ball will travel.

Wow, another first time winner last weekend at the Byron Nelson Championship. Brett Wetterich used a mixed bag of Titleist and Cleveland clubs including the new 588 DSG wedges en route to his first PGA Tour victory. Trevor Immelman also had another strong showing finishing in second place for the second consecutive week.
Forget the Hole Short Game Drill
When it comes down to it, the hole is only four and a quarter inches wide. Considering the average par 4 is about 390 yards or 14,400 inches long, getting it into the hole in four shots is quite the feat, especially into such a small target. One thing I like to stress when teaching golf, is for my students to make their practice sessions as fun, easy and rewarding as possible. Success and confidence are a huge benefit for all golfers. With it the impossible seems reachable and if you’re smart about your practice sessions, you too can make it apart of your game.
